Hey Joshua! With the recent Supreme Court case that involved gender and sexual preference discrimination, I thought your poster was extremely timely. I had no idea legislation regarding this topic hasn't already been passed in Maryland (although I'm glad to see it was passed in my home state of CT). Is there anything that can be done about this?

Hi Joshua,
What drew me to this poster was because it is not a topic that is commonly talked about which it should be. I think its so sad how the number of hate crimes against gay men hasn’t changed and how the number of hate crimes against transgender people have increased. What do you think the government can do to reduce these numbers ?

Hi Joshua, What stood out to me from your poster was the importance of your topic in the justice system. I learned more about the panic defense that is used in a legal proceeding to justify hate crimes and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community and its lasting impact. What measure can we take to remove panic defense and also educate people more about this issue?

I've heard so many times that the LGBTQ+ community already has so many accomplishments what more could they need? But no one ever wants to talk about homophobia or transphobia or even hate crimes. I think that your research brings us a great point about homophobia in certain demographics and how this can translate into less protection for the LGBTQ+ community in, for instance, places like the…

Hi Joshua! During my first year at UMD, many of my classes have talked about the issues in LGBTQ+ rights and I thought your research was interesting because I have not learned a lot about specific data on hate crimes towards the queer community. I learned that although hate crime against gay men has not increased in the past 10 years, it has increased for trans people. IN addition, areas such as Souther states, who are known to be more conservative, are more likely to find a defendant non-guilty if the victim's sexuality is identified. This data proves a very serious point in legal justice. I was curious if there was any other data other than UCR that you were…
