Considering the high rate of incarceration of black men this topic really caught my attention. Although one may assume that mental health may be a problem for inmates, I was not aware of how little efforts are put towards treating inmates who develop mental illnesses during their incarceration. This makes me think about how people get trapped in a cycle once they are incarcerated for the first time and I wonder how much of it can be attributed to the lack of regard for mental health in prisons.

Hi Maddie! Your project really stood out to me since I think mental health awareness and the prison system form an interesting social justice niche. I learned just how inadequate mental health services are in prisons and how these inadequacies can seriously harm inmates. Do you think mental health legislation/budgeting for prisons is something we'll see in the near future?

Hi Maddie, your poster really stood out to me because this is an issue I am very passionate as a psychology and criminology/criminal justice double major! I learned that access to adequate mental health resources is very important for inmates, especially for when they leave prisons and re-enter society. Being given proper access to mental health services will mitigate their risks of posing public safety concerns. It is commonly thought that inmates are in prison because they are being punished, and they are therefore unworthy of mental health resources. This approach will only result in more harm to society. Do you plan on pursuing a career in this field --> the intersection of mental health and criminal justice?

Your research has given me a better understanding of just how give this situation really is and the dreadful effects not he prisoner if they were to be released. However, the stats for recidivism for prisoners with inadequate mental health resources.

Hi Maddie, I was interested by your poster because I've always considered mental health to be an incredibly important issue for everyone, but never really thought about the implications for incarcerated people, who have to deal with increased stressors that most people will never experience. I learned from your poster that, although mental health trainings and some professionals in the field are available to inmates, these resources are somewhat underfunded, and could be greatly improved. How do you think that the quality of these resources can be adequately regulated, if proper funding is given?
