Investing in the education of the students of PG community only further helps us, as a whole. These children are our future and it felt absolutely gratifying to personally step in and make a change in their lives.
Kanyin, I really loved your poster because I've also worked with children and I felt both you and your tutee learned a lot of things in the process. I think that when it comes to tutoring/mentoring kids, one goes in with the mindset that you're going to be the only one teaching them when obviously that isn't the case. I loved that you were able to actually build a relationship with your tutee and that it wasn't strictly all educational. I think that your work here really emphasizes how important it is for underprivileged students to have a mentor that can guide them in their schoolwork, especially when they have no one else to turn to.
I think it's cool that the STAR program helps out disadvantaged kids because doing that helps close the education gap that exists between students with more and less wealth. I didn't know much about the STAR program before reading this poster, but you guys are clearly doing good for the community, keep up the good work!
Hi Kanyin, your project interested me because I have experience working with kids and tutoring kids. I really liked your analogy comparing lawyers and children twisting instruction in their favor. I agree that talking with children is really good practice in public speaking in the future. I also think that your activity that explains inequality and injustice is really creative! What specific Thera Play activities did you do with your mentee, and do you think that these activities helped establish trust between you both?
This poster stood out to me because it was a Lakeland STARs mentor poster, and your career path is similar to mine. With this poster, I learned a lot more about the Lakeland STARs program and how impactful it is for the students who took part as mentors and those students who received tutoring and mentorship. One question that I have is if all the kids who were mentored and tutored in this program went to the same school.
